My Hints

  • A paint brush can be kept soft with paint for a few hours or even for a day by sealing in a zip lock type plastic bag. Don't try to keep for several days as could develop mildew. I do the same with roller covers. If a paint job covers a couple of days just stick the roller cover in a zip lock type plastic bag, hold the roller through the plastic bag and pull the handle off, zip the bag closed.
  • Make sure to clean the edge of the paint can to assure tight closure of the lid or paint will dry out quicker.
  • When using latex paint be sure to keep a damp cloth with you to immediately wipe up any spills. Latex will come up with water but if allowed to dry, well, good luck.
  • Have a woodscrew that is stripped out, use toothpicks or a golf tee to fill the hole along with a little wood glue then reinsert the woodscrew.
  • I use "pudding cups" (or similar items) to hold screws, etc. when taking an item apart and mark the name of the item on the side of the cup.
  • Disposable pie pans and aluminum pans from "pot pies" are good to hold small parts or for mixing paint or as a glue pot.
  • Old veneer can be removed with a steam iron. An old towel placed down first can help hold the moisture and heat on the surface and protect the iron and the old veneer. See next hint before proceeding
  • Before using your family steam iron buy them a new one and use the old one in the shop. This keeps peace and unity in the family and helps to prevent ruining a white blouse or shirt.
